BilbaoBilbao is located in the north of the historical territory, in the mouth of Ibaizabal-Nervión River. Apart from being the capital of Bizkaia, it is the most populated and industrialised city. It is surrounded by several mountains such as Pagasarri, Ganeta, Restaleku, Arnotegi, Artxanda and Santo Domingo.
The city is immersed in a growing-process. Some of its features are: the tube, the port's enlargement, the expansion of green areas, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Palacio Euskalduna and the Museo Marítimo, among others. However, the city keeps still its old charm.
The Old Part, known as the Siete Calles (Seven Streets), constitutes Bilbao's core, its main commercial and leisure area in the city. Walking through the narrow streets of the city, discovering its bridges, viewpoints, peculiar buildings, squares and gardens supposes a very pleasurable activity.
Nearby Arenal bridge connects the old part with 19th Century's urban expansion area, formed by elegant buildings and big blocks. The main axe is the Gran Vía, elegant commerce and bank artery now enhanced as a semi-pedestrian street. Bizkaia's capital is also a financial and service centre. Bilbao Stock Exchange, economical reference at State level and the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC), house of relevant international fairs, are two of its main economic features. On the other hand, the Port of Bilbao is the biggest and most important one in the Basque Country and, besides, it is considered among the leading ports in Europe.
Cosy, plural and cosmopolitan city, Bilbao has left behind the ugly and grey image offered in the past. Thus, a growing number of visitors come every year, above all during the Aste Nagusia de Bilbao, the main festival of the city, that takes place in August and is represented by Mari Jaia, Aste Nagusia's soul.
